Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Bronze headstones in New Jersey are subject to each cemetery's individual monument regulations. These rules — covering permitted plaque sizes, base configurations, mounting methods, and in some cases surface finishes — vary from one institution to the next. Lawn-maintenance cemeteries throughout central and southern NJ often mandate flush-mounted plaques with no raised edges above a specified height; traditional section cemeteries in northern counties typically allow upright granite-base configurations with mounted bronze plaques. Bronze Memorial Shop confirms the current regulations at your cemetery before any production step begins, ensuring the finished monument is ready for installation without modification.

Foundation Requirements

The granite base beneath a bronze headstone requires a concrete foundation — poured by our installation crew to the depth and specification set by the receiving cemetery. For flush-mounted plaques on flat granite, this typically means a compacted gravel and concrete bed; for upright configurations, it means a poured footing at the frost-line depth appropriate to the northern New Jersey climate. Our crew allows adequate cure time after pouring before the granite base is set, then levels the assembly with mechanical equipment. We do not skip this step in the interest of schedule — a properly cured, level foundation is what keeps your monument plumb and stable for the decades ahead.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Bronze plaques are among the most broadly accepted memorial formats in New Jersey's faith-affiliated cemeteries. Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Orthodox institutions throughout Morris and Bergen counties have long histories with bronze as a memorial material, and many institutions specifically recommend it for their flat-marker sections. Faith symbols — from the Latin cross to the Star of David to the Orthodox double-bar cross — can be incorporated as cast-relief elements in the plaque design. We confirm the appropriateness of all imagery with your cemetery's office before the design is finalized.

Headstone

A bronze headstone from Bronze Memorial Shop is a partnership of two materials: cast bronze plaque and American granite base. The bronze carries the memorial's primary content — the name in raised-relief lettering, the dates, the epitaph, the borders, and any symbols or portrait — while the granite provides the structural base and visual grounding. This combination has served New Jersey families for generations because it balances the warmth of metal with the permanence of stone. Bronze headstones are available as flush-mounted plaques for lawn-section cemeteries, as plaques mounted on upright granite bases for traditional sections, and in slant-base configurations for cemeteries that favor that profile. Lettering on bronze plaques is rendered in raised relief — meaning the letters stand above the background surface rather than being cut into it — giving them a visibility and tactile quality that flat-surface engraving cannot achieve. Decorative borders and symbols are also cast in relief, creating a monument with visual depth even when viewed from a distance. As years pass, the bronze develops a natural patina that deepens its tone and enriches its character without compromising legibility.

Bronze Options

The bronze alloy Bronze Memorial Shop specifies for memorial plaques is a leaded bronze composition standard in the American memorial industry: dense enough to hold fine casting detail, formulated for outdoor weather resistance, and consistent in color from batch to batch. American-made bronze sourced from established foundries gives us confidence in its performance over the decades of outdoor exposure your monument will face. The granite base component is drawn from our American granite inventory — available in black, dark gray, mahogany, and other colors. Most families choose black or dark gray granite to create the strongest contrast with the bronze plaque; mahogany granite produces a warmer, earth-toned combination that some families find appropriate for their tradition. Our Morris County showroom maintains bronze finish samples and granite slabs for side-by-side comparison.

Custom Design Process

The design process for a bronze headstone at Bronze Memorial Shop begins with a conversation about the person being remembered. What did their life include? What symbols carried meaning to them? What should the monument say when visitors read it a generation from now? Consultations are conducted in English, Russian, and Polish, at our Morris County showroom or by phone. From those conversations, our design team produces a scaled drawing showing every element — lettering, borders, symbols, portrait if requested, and base configuration — in its correct proportion. You approve this drawing before any casting mold is produced. Once approved, the design moves to our bronze foundry partner, where the plaque is cast and returned to our workshop for hand-finishing, mounting, and inspection before delivery.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Producing a bronze headstone at Bronze Memorial Shop follows six defined stages. One: the family consultation, where we gather every design detail and document the cemetery's location for regulatory review. Two: the scaled design drawing, produced by our team and approved by you before any production step begins. Three: casting mold preparation — the approved design is translated into the pattern from which the bronze plaque will be cast, a precision process that determines the quality of every raised-relief element. Four: bronze casting and hand-finishing — the plaque is cast, cooled, and extracted; our artisans then hand-finish every surface, sharpening raised letters and cleaning relief elements to ensure the finished piece matches the approved drawing exactly. Five: mounting and inspection — the finished bronze plaque is set on the prepared granite base, secured with appropriate mechanical and adhesive fastening, and inspected against the approved drawing. Six: delivery and installation — the assembled monument is transported to the cemetery, placed on a poured foundation by our crew, leveled and plumbed, and photographed for your family's records. We send you the installation photograph as the final confirmation of completed work.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a headstones?

Bronze headstones typically take ten to fourteen weeks from initial consultation to installed monument, including the bronze casting step which adds time beyond a granite-only monument. We communicate a production schedule at the start of your order so you can plan accordingly.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. We serve families and install monuments across all 14 New Jersey counties. Morris, Bergen, and Essex are our most active counties, but our installation crews travel regularly throughout the state. Every installation is handled by Bronze Memorial Shop's own team — we do not subcontract monument placement.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Every bronze headstone is designed to the specific regulations of the receiving cemetery. We review those regulations before production begins. Bronze is accepted in virtually all New Jersey cemeteries, but specific mounting and base configurations are confirmed for every order.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Portrait work, religious imagery, military emblems, and personal symbols can all be incorporated as cast-relief elements in your bronze plaque. Our design team translates any reference material you provide into a scaled drawing for your approval before casting begins.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Bronze companion headstones for two individuals on a shared base are frequently requested and beautifully executed in this material. Veteran memorials incorporating cast-relief military insignia are also among our most common requests. We are knowledgeable about VA burial benefits and can advise on coordinating private and government-furnished markers.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
